East European Jewish history. The Centre for Jewish Studies was approached by the Manchester Jewish Museum to translate a document. PhD student Eugene Polykov (Dept of Russian Studies) provided the translation, which was a passport and deferment paper (1904) for a 29 year old Jewish carver from Troki, Lithuania, recently discharged from military service, which allowed him to move through the Russian Empire “in the places where Jews are allowed to reside” for a year.
