New Publication

Modern Hebrew short stories. Moshe Behar has published an essay (in Hebrew) entitled "'Little Nadra' was also a 'Yemenite'" in Cafe Gibraltar (24 February 2015) on three little-known short stories that world-renowned Yemenite-Israeli choreographer Sara Levy-Tanay (1910-2005) published during her early 20's in 1933 and 1934. Middle Eastern Studies Developments

Times Higher Education. Dr Adam Ozanne (School of Social Sciences) has had a letter published in the THE (26 Feb 2015) in which he queries the University's decision to withdraw Middle Eastern Studies courses. He notes the recent comments by Rory Stewart MP that a lack of people who could speak local languages was a major problem for the British army in Afghanistan and Iraq, and that there is a need to improve our "deep understanding" of the Middle East to oppose Islamic State.  Further information.

TV documentary, France

A Doctor Under Nazism. Jean-Marc Dreyfus was the academic consultant and co-writer for this French documentary 'T4. Un médecin sous le nazisme' (52 min, directed by Catherine Bernstein) which explores the Nazis' notorious T4 euthanasia programme. It focuses on one doctor, Hallervorden, who claimed the brains of victims to advance his own research. The premiere will be held 12 March in Paris. Further information.

Reading Group

Jewish law vs Jewish ethics. The next meeting of the Manchester Ancient Law reading group will be led by Katharina Keim who will bring an excerpt from the Pirke de Rabbi Eliezer, a much debated collection of biblical interpretations which poses all sorts of methodological and theoretical challenges (dating, provenance, text composition, interpolations, genre, etc). 5pm Wed 4 March in A114 of the Samuel Alexander building.
