George Brooke

 

The Secret of the Copper Dead Sea Scroll. George Brooke was featured in "Raiders of the Lost Past" (series 2, episode 12) on the Yesterday Channel on 19 February. In the programme, he talks about the Copper Dead Sea Scroll and how some aspects of the reputation of John Allegro, a former lecturer at the University of Manchester, might be restored. On Wednesday 29 April at around 7:30pm UK time, Moshe Behar was interviewed in Hebrew by the feminist broadcaster Ms Keren Noybach in her on radio programme "Seder Yom" about his 2015 article 'The centennial of 'Flora Saporto': Thoughts on the possibility of a Mizrahi-Feminist alliance'. YouTube.

Jewish Arab Thought. Moshe Behar spoke on Israeli radio TLV1 about 'Reconciling 'Jewishness' and 'Arabness': A rainbow of Jewish thought in the Middle East'. 27 June 2014. Listen again.

On 26 June 2013, Moshe Behar was interviewed in Hebrew by the well known feminist broadcaster Ms Keren Noybach about his new book Modern Middle Eastern Jewish Thought on the daily Israeli radio programme "Seder Yom". Listen again: mp3 or wav.

On 15 December 2011, Dr Moshe Behar was interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester (Andy Crane’s show) about the implications of the withdrawal of armed American Forces from Iraq.

On 4 Jan 2016, Jean-Marc Dreyfus spoke to the news channel France 24 about Hitler’s Mein Kampf, which re-enters the public domain in Germany from 11 January. Further information.

70 years since the liberation of the camps. Jean-Marc Dreyfus gave a lengthy radio interview about liberation and reparations to France Culture (in French) on 28 Jan 2015. Listen again.

On 24 January 2014 Jean-Marc Dreyfus participated in the talk show 'Bibliothèque Mazarine' on the French TV channel Public Sénat on looted art and cultural objets, with the French minister of Culture, Ms Aurélie Filippetti. Watch on YouTube.

Francesca Frazer

 

On Monday 18 July 2011, CJS co-administrator and current PhD student, Francesca Frazer was interviewed by Basil Herwald on BBC Radio Manchester's 'Jewish Citizen Manchester'. Also a committee member of Manchester's Council of Christians and Jews, she spoke about CCJ Manchester’s activities and about her recent trip, with co-chairs David and Steve, to the ICCJ conference in Cracow and her visit to Auschwitz at the beginning of this month. Cathy Gelbin

 

Cathy Gelbin appeared in the German-French TV channel ARTE documentary Golem: Die Legende vom Menschen (The Legend of the Human), which aired on 23 September 2016. Further information.

The Hulk, Superman and the Terminator are all modern echoes of the Golem, one of the most instantly recognisable icons of Jewish popular culture. Dr. Cathy Gelbin has recently published The Golem Returns and on Monday 18 July 2011 she spoke to Nigel Soni on BBC Radio Manchester's 'Jewish Citizen Manchester' to explain more about the legend of the Golem. Yaron Matras

 

On 31 January 2013, speaking on behalf of the Multilingual Manchester project, Prof. Yaron Matras criticised the accuracy of the census data on languages in Manchester, noting in particular that 'Manchester is home to the fourth largest Yiddish-speaking community in the world, yet the census only mentions five speakers'. Great British Faith. On Monday 2 April 2012, 10pm CJS honorary research fellows Dr. Yaakov Wise and Bill Williams featured in the new series of the popular Great British Faith on BBC Radio 2, in which Hardeep Singh Kohli journeys to three of the most exciting cities in the UK, London, Belfast and Manchester and, in doing so, tells the story of faith in Britain today. This edition focuses on the Jewish communities of Greater Manchester, their history, culture and observance.

On Monday 5 September 2011 at 7pm, Bill, founder of the Manchester Jewish Museum, was due to be interviewed by Basil Herwald on BBC Radio Manchester's 'Jewish Citizen Manchester' (95.1FM / DAB). Unfortunately, due to ill health, he was unable to come into the studio, but we did hear many of his friends and colleagues talking about him from the celebration at the Museum on the previous day. Listen again: mp3 or wav.

Heart And Soul (Religious Documentary Series): 22 Sept 2012. Clive Lawton, who describes himself as Modern Orthodox travels to north Manchester with his guide Dr Yaakov Wise to meet the community, which is both a window and mirror on to the whole Jewish diaspora, but he finds, as the community increases in size, so it is becoming more introverted.
