Holocaust studies. Congratulations to Ion Popa whose book The Romanian Orthodox Church and the Holocaust (2017) has been awarded the Yad Vashem International Book Prize for Holocaust Research for 2018.

Post-graduate prize. This prize is awarded annually to the student with 'the best MA thesis in the area of comparative religious studies' at the University of Manchester. For 2018, this was Lawrence Rabone, 'What does Moses Wall’s English translation of Menasseh Ben Israel’s The Hope of Israel (1650) illustrate about the existence and nature of philo-Semitism?' Post-graduate prize. This prize is awarded annually to the student with 'the highest grade for a master's dissertation in Jewish Studies' at the University of Manchester. It honours the Centre's second co-director Bernard Jackson. For 2018 this was: Sherry Ashworth (MA in Religions & Theology), '"So little like the people in Daniel Deronda": How reading George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda and Amy Levy’s Reuben Sachs together helps us understand both novels and the times in which they were written' (supervised by Daniel Langton). Reading challenging sacred texts. Scriptural Encounters bring together different faiths to debate and discuss controversial topics. The second session will be led by Dr Dwight Swanson Co-Director and Senior Lecturer Manchester Centre for the Study of Christianity and Islam, Nazarene College on the topic of Exclusivism and Supersessionism. Manchester Jewish history. Tobias Theodores was, among other things, a lecturer in Hebrew at the University of Manchester from 1866 and was one of the founding members of the Reform Synagogue in the city. Catholic Church and the Holocaust in Romania. The Centre wishes to congratulate Ion Popa on his Fortunoff Research Fellowship at the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute. He will be working on a study of Experiences of Jews who Converted to Christianity Before and During the Holocaust. Further information.
